About Accreditation

Accreditation is a comprehensive process for evaluating and assuring that the quality of education meets or exceeds standards of good practice. Leeward Community College is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education. It assures the public that Leeward meets or exceeds specific standards of quality; makes us eligible to participate in Title IV student financial aid programs; and provides us with self and peer review and encourages us to improve. In addition, institutions rely on accreditation in their decisions to recognize transfer credit.

Leeward Community College follows a six-year cycle during which institutional review is continuous, culminating in a comprehensive self evaluation report and an on-site visit by a team of peer evaluators. In this report, we rigorously evaluate how well we meet or exceed the four ACCJC Standards:

  • (1) institutional mission and effectiveness,
  • (2) student learning programs and services,
  • (3) resources, and
  • (4) leadership and self governance.

Our self study, which took a standards-based approach, was submitted to ACCJC in August, 2012. The accrediting commission has assigned a team of peer evaluators the task of conducting a multi-day visit to the college, where documentary evidence, interviews of faculty, staff, and students, observation of classes and support service programs are undertaken. This team’s task during the October 2012 visit is to certify that the college meets all standards of good practice and to develop a comprehensive report and recommendation for consideration by the accrediting commission.

In January, 2013, the accrediting commission will act on the team’s recommendation regarding the reaffirmation of Leeward CC’s accreditation status for the next six years.

The intent of this website is to provide the public information on our accreditation reports, our actionable improvement plans related to the accreditation standards, and our efforts toward fully meeting the four accreditation standards.
